The Alliston Ministerial Association
The Spiritual Care Visitor Ministry at Stevenson Memorial Hospital is adding new members to it's team!
If you are a good listener, comfortable in the hospital, have a compassionate heart and would like to join our team the first step will be to fill out an application form for the Hospital Auxiliary there will be an interview and training will be provided. If you would like more information please contact me Rev. Deacon Pam Alderson at pam.alderson@standrewanglican.ca or 705-791-8739
This is an interdenominational team which functions under the umbrella of the Hospital Auxiliary. This ministry started in September 2012 on the invitation of the hospital administration.
The members of the original team were trained by The Rev. Don Shields Chaplain from Markham Stouffville Hospital. Since then three more groups have been trained by The Rev. Kim McArthur and Wendy Graham including training for an On Call Pastors team.
Spiritual Care Visitors spend a couple of hours going in and out of hospital rooms listening to patients and sharing stories. Sometimes we are asked to pray for them or their families.
If you register you will be trained.
This course will teach you the basics about spiritual care in a hospital setting in the context of a volunteer. This time of training is an opportunity for you to discern if this ministry is for you. At the same time, it is an opportunity for the facilitator to discern your gifting as a spiritual care visitor.
To qualify you must be endorsed by the minister at your church. You also must be a member of a local church in good standing.
Taking this course does not mean automatic acceptance, but is a requirement.
We meet monthly for ongoing support and enhanced learning.
If you feel you have a heart for this type of ministry,
download the form, fill it out and email it back to Rev. Pam Alderson.
HEARTFELT NEEDS
Although it can be difficult to find a common definition, one way of understanding spiritual care is that it responds to basic universal human
needs - needs that are not necessarily religious, nor limited to end-of-life concerns.
These are the needs for:
- connection and love
- forgiveness and reconciliation
- the ability to accept and transform suffering
- to find meaning in life, illness and dying
